Java SE Development Kit (JDK) 6 Update 18, released by Sun Microsystems, Inc., is a legacy software development kit for building, testing, and debugging applications on the Java Platform, Standard Edition 6. It includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), the HotSpot virtual machine, the Java compiler (javac), standard class libraries, and developer tools such as javadoc, jar, jdb, and keytool, along with sample code and documentation. This maintenance update provides performance, stability, and security improvements over earlier JDK 6 releases and supports cross-platform development for desktop and server applications on Windows, Linux, and Solaris in both 32- and 64-bit configurations.
Because JDK 6 has reached the end of public updates, Update 18 is best suited for maintaining existing Java 6–based systems. For new development, use a current long-term support (LTS) release of the JDK.
